Our latest adventures in Haiti

Oyis Mark Daroshefski

Oyis in May 2010

That’s right, Oyis, the young boy we cared for after the earthquake nearly 4 years ago, who had suffered a head injury and a horribly fractured right leg, is now officially the adopted son of Sondra and Michael Daroshefski.  Sondra is a  NICU nurse that accompanied us on that first, most fateful trip and has supported us ever since.  Most importantly, she and her husband as well as their children welcomed Oyis to their home in Roanoke, VA later that year as a medical host family. Oyis’ parents were no longer living and when his sister indicated she could not properly care for him in Haiti she asked the Daroshefski family to pursue adoption.  He has since undergone additional surgery and therapy to correct his leg fracture and has recovered from his head injury. He has acclimated very well to life in the USA, though Sondra and her family strive to keep him connected to his Haitian heritage.  We are so excited to report on this wonderful success story as it exemplifies what we are hoping to achieve as Project Starfish-Haiti and we are so happy for the growing Daroshefski family. Brewery Benefit Success!

Hi All,

So sorry it has taken awhile to get this posted.  I am finally enrolled in a Social Media for Dummies course…and do I ever need it!!  So, in no way does this delay reflect our appreciation for those who hosted, attended and donated to our Project.  We cannot express enough gratitude to Parkway Brewing Co. and The Landing Restaurant/Bruno’s GastroTruck for hosting Project Starfish Haiti’s inaugural public fundraising event…not to mention their very generous support for our mission. Thanks also to WSLS 10 for their coverage of this event.  Many thanks to those who attended and to those who made additional donations in support of our cause.  The day was warm, but the beverages were cold and tasty, the food was fantastic and the entertainment, provided by Ben Trout, was great!! Day 7 – Last Day of Clinics

Good evening everyone! Last night was another nice night for sleeping but there was another false alarm at 3 am and apparently singing and drums at that same early hour…for those who heard them. Read More

Day 6

Good evening to all on this, our 6th day!

Hard to believe we are nearing the last day of clinics! Last night proved to be a nice cool night- even a bit chilly (Kez would be proud). Sleeping was good until our feathered friends awoke….as always. Again, I am beginning to become accustomed to the morning serenade but not so much that I will actually miss it. And last night I thought Blaud’s tonsils were regrowing, but in fact it turned out to be a young Whitehead…luckily he rolled and there was again peace in our little corner of the world. Read More
