Day 6 – Last Day in the Bush

So I think exhaustion has really kicked in because last night when the generator shut off at 10PM sharp, the chatter nearly completely stopped and I think we were all asleep in minutes. Between the heat, the long and bumpy moto rides and the long clinic hours, it seems we are all truly sapped by the end of the day.

We awoke to the sounds of braying donkeys and roosters today. One more bush clinic‎ and this one we actually travel to by van….bouncy yes, but much less dust!! ‎We may even have air conditioning. Again after breakfast we divided up and then got the word the people were waiting for us and there were many in line, so we loaded up and headed the other direction. Thirty minutes later we pulled through the gate to find a crowd expecting us though NOT rowdy today. This time the clinic was much more open but unfortunately the breeze was blocked by it’s surrounding walls, so the temp rose quickly. Read More

Day 5 – Bush Clinic #2, Di Croix

‎So last night as we were preparing to turn in early as I mentioned, we had a surprise visit from Vanessa and none other than baby Charli. Did I mention how darn cute he is? Well, he had us all laughing and smiling for a good hour and….did I mention how cute he is??

We finally did hit the sack and again, the weather ‎was great for sleeping. We awoke ready for another ride to the countryside and likely another busy day at Clinic Jolivert. After breakfast, we broke into groups, those going to the bush clinic mounted up and set off for another day in the mountains. Read More

Day 4 – First Day in the Bush

Last night really did turn out to be a great sleeping night….earplugs were a blessing! We awoke with anticipation of our first ride to the bush clinic in Coton, but first we enjoyed a tasty breakfast of french toast and Haitian grits.

Once down the hill to the clinic building we were ‎all divided onto specific motorcycles…The Sons of Anarchy got nothin’ on us. Shortly after, we were on the rode to Bassin Bleu and then into the mountains. The ride was shorter this year…at least for me, since I was not required to get off the moto and run alongside this time. Despite the shorter duration, the distance remains the same and I am again astounded that these people walk so far just for the necessities. Read More

Day 3 – Back to Work!

Well, soon after lights out last night, the wildlife made itself known quite well. We heard the dogs protecting their territory, donkeys braying, roosters crowing….and yes, there were bears….bears, bears everywhere. Regardless‎, we all managed to drift off to sleep.

We also got quite cold at night and were looking for ‎something to cover up…definitely cooler at night in the countryside. Of course, shortly after the roosters began crowing in earnest around 5 AM, the dawn began breaking and the temp began warming. Soon the sun was beating down and it turned to a balmy day.  Read More

Day 2 – Back to Jolivert

As expected, last night was an early night by our standards….unless of course you were less than 20 years old. As all us “old folks” were turning out the lights at 9 PM, Lindsay was suiting up in her best Under Armor to challenge the boys at 2 on 2 basketball. Once showered though, most of us were fast asleep getting much needed rest. I slept so well that I didn’t even realize I had lost an hour with daylight savings time….turns out Haiti decided to observe the time change this year. I awoke to the now familiar and cherished sound of roosters…so many roosters….sounded like all the roosters I have ever heard in Haiti just outside our windows…music! No matter, we all seemed to rest well and once treated to eggs, toast and fresh fruit, we were ready to load up for the journey up the coast and inland to Jolivert.  Read More
